BACKGROUND:
Bill was born February 2, 1946, in Albany, Georgia. He grew up in Arlington, Virginia and Orlando, Florida, graduating from Boone High School in 1963. He worked his way through college, attending both F.S.U. and Rollins College. Prior to attending law school, Bill worked at Martin Marietta in Orlando. He graduated from F.S.U. College of Law with honors in 1976.
His first job as a lawyer was with the State Attorney’s Office
in Orlando, Florida, where he prosecuted many criminal defendants
by jury trial. He then went into private practice doing plaintiff’s
cases and criminal defense. In 1980, Mr. Furlow went to work with
the old Department of Professional Regulation where he became the
chief attorney over prosecution of all the regulated professions.
In 1988 Mr. Furlow switched sides and started defending people
and companies from action by the state. He did that in the law
firm of Katz Kutter et al, prior to Akerman
Senterfitt's takeover in 2008.
Bill has handled hundreds of formal administrative
hearings before the Division of Administrative Hearings (DOAH). He
is Board certified by the Florida Bar in State and Federal Government
and Administrative Practice. Bill has defended most types of professional licensees regulated
by the state. Bill has prosecuted a number of appeals against state agencies,
and successfully pursued actions for legal costs and fees against
several state agencies. Some
of the professions defended by Mr. Furlow are: Physicians,
Osteopathic Physicians, Dentists, Pharmacists, Optometrist, Podiatrist,
Lawyers, Nurses, Psychologists, Insurance Agents, Real estate brokers,
Contractors, Chiropractors, Veterinarians, Hearing aid specialists,
Massage therapists, Engineers, Teachers, Private investigators, Concealed
weapon permit holders, and others. Mr.
Furlow is well experienced and qualified to handle almost any dispute
between a government agency and an individual or company.
Bill
is married to Tina Furlow, an attorney with the Department of Legal
Affairs, and has three children: Chelle, Connie and Becca. He
has resided in Tallahassee, Florida since 1983. He has written
several training books in his field and normally participates in
two or three lectures per year. Bill enjoys travel, reading, old cars and trucks, and sudoku. He
believes that the purpose of a lawyer is to assist the client with
their legal problems, and do so for a reasonable fee. He is
fortunate to have many long-standing clients, who are also now his
friends. At GF&B, Bill welcomes
the chance to practice with his partners, in an informal environment,
doing the kind of work he enjoys. You can E-mail Mr. Furlow
